Efren Penaflorida

Efren G. Penaflorida [Youth Category]

Being a victim of bullying and gang fights, Ef decided to be involved in volunteerism so he can help elminate the cause of the street children, out-of-school youth, scavengers, and jevenile delinguents in his province in Cavite. He started his volunteer work in the Cavite City District Jail where he assisted in giving food and reading materials to the prisoners.

To minimize the increase of gang formations in his community, he organized his friends to form an alternative group called Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) in 1997. The group has been actively involved in mentoring teens, training youth leaders, and conducting advocacy campaigns in the areas of education and youth reform. With Ef's leadership, more than 100 volunteers have been recruited by the DTC. He also trained 50 volunteer youth leaders in teaching the outreach curriculum which the DTC also developed. This volunteering and community service program has extended to other parts of the province and has benefitted around school children and youths.

Agana

Mark Aethen G. Agana [Youth Category]

As a graduate of a public high school, Mark experienced the challenges of studying in an underprivileged learning environment. He believed that there are students from poor families who have great potentials to succeed if provided with better educational resources and facilities. This realization prompted Mark to do his share in helping poor but derserving students increase their chances to go to college.

In 2004, Pathways to Higher Education, a program of Ateneo de Manila University, commissioned the T'nalak Youth Group (TYG) to implement its new and innovative social involvement program. This program identifies bright but financially-underprivileged public high school students equip with academic and non-academic skills to ensure they get a fair chance of a college education. TYG is a student organization at Notre Dame of Marbel University in South Cotabato in which Mark has been an active member and leader.

  
Amalla

Carlito C. Amalla [Youth Category]

Carlito symbolizes a new breed of progressive Agusan Manobo tribe. He maintains his distinct culture and at the same time blends in the modern technology.

In 1998, Carlito offered his services to the University of the Philippines Ugnayan ng Pahinungod where he became actively involved in the Roving Library Program. Carlito toured the communities in the UP campus carrying a bag with children's books to teach reading to the out-of-school children and school children after school. More than 300 children received tutorials in math, reading, writing, paining, dancing, and storytelling. Being an artist, Carlito blen comics performances into his teaching which entices the children to learn as well as enjoy the activities.

  
Blando

Florentina Vigilia Blando [Adult Category]

Mrs. Florentina Vigilia Blando's life can best be described as "a lifetime of continued volunteering. She followed the footsteps of her mother who was a volunteer health aide during the WWII. She was still in her childhood years during the war, but the experience made an impact on her and she joined the Red Cross Junior Volunteers when she was in her third year high school. Her first exposure was as a first aide and visiting prisoners at the Provincial Jail of Pangasinan.

  
Suntay

Isabel Cojuangco Suntay [Adult Category]

Ms. Suntay's care and concern to improve the living condition of those who have less in life inspired her into action through the spirit of volunteerism. Ms. Suntay joined the Balikatan sa Kauntaran of Tarlac Chapter in the 1980's. Her involvement with Balikatan made her realize that much can be done to help other in their pursuit for a better life.

Ms. Suntay's volunteer work focuses on livelihood projects for the poor families in Tarlac. She initiated apiculture/honey bee propagation seminar for 200 barangay people, raising awareness on honey bees as a viable income source. Likewise, she identified funding sources to support start-up activities.

  

Zenaida V. Rotea [Adult Category]

One only needs to look at the faces of disadvantaged women and children whose lives have been touched by Dr. Rotea to realize the extent of her compassion, conviction and faith in her duty as woman. Over the past two decades, Dr. Rotea has served as a volunteer and leader on women empowerment and the promotion of women's spirituality, dignity, and rights.

  
Zerna

Gerry Duwin A. Dela Zerna [Adult Category]

Mr. dela Zerna's personal exposure to the plight of poor and vagrant children while he was a college student motivated him to dedicate his time to uplifting their cause. In 1997, he founded the Guided and Unified Interaction for the Development of Children, Inc. (GUIDE, Inc.). GUIDE aims to provide services to children and youth with mental, physical, and emotional handicap including orphaned, abandoned, and street children.

To date, Gabayan, the GUIDE's flagship programme, has benefited 1,767 children and youth in 11 communities in Batangas, Laguna, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, Quezon, Bulacan, Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, and Mountain Provinces.

  
RedCross

Philippine National Red Cross [Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award]

Through its 94 chapters nationwide, the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) provides six major services: 1) disaster management, 2) blood services, 3) safety services, 4) community health and nursing, 5) social services, and 6) volunteer services.

The strength and pride of PNRC is its corps of volunteers composed all walks of life. One of PNRC's recent projects that harnesses volunteerism is Red Cross 143, in which mobilizes a core group of volunteers with one team leader and 43 members in every barangay who will be trained in disaster preparedness and response, health welfare, and blood donation.
