Jay Mendoza Although Jay C. Mendoza didn't have a solid volunteering background before joining United Nations Volunteers (UNV), he considers himself a born volunteer. He joined the volunteering world with a hidden but deep desire to help those who are in need.

A keen observer with a creative mind, deep concern for others, and faith in what he believes, Mendoza is indeed a born volunteer. For him, volunteering is a noble act, while volunteers are priceless.

"Remember, volunteers aren't paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless," says Mendoza.

Volunteering as a catechist during high school was not something planned by Mendoza. It was during his third and fourth year of college that he went to a public school and became a teacher where he witnessed poor socio-economic conditions of the schoolchildren. It was a small but important step in Mendoza's life.

After earning his college degree from De La Salle Lipa, he was granted a scholarship as a student assistant in his college Registrar Office. There he learned how to handle administrative work, make students' schedule, and assist enrollees. It taught him how he can execute his tasks with responsibility.

He joined AIG as business process specialist after graduation. He worked there for almost five years and now feels proud of being a productive employee. During his employment, he also studied for a Masters in Management Technology from De La Salle.

From there, Mendoza's life took a new turn. He offered his services to UNV and, according to him, it was a pleasant surprise when he got a call-up as UNV Researcher for National Accounts.

"Unexpectedly, I was selected for a role in UNV. I was not expecting that I will be selected since my previous work was not related to volunteering. But despite that it didn't dampen my spirit for joining this organisation (UNV). Fortunately, I was chosen and now I am a part of the UNV as Researcher for National Accounts," says Mendoza.

Mendoza believes that one should never let go the opportunity and should always grab it as only a few are given a chance to prove their talent.

"Not everyone is given a chance. So we must not take for granted the opportunities offered to us. Being a part of UNV, I want to make my stay here worthwhile for those who are part of this organization," he says.

For Mendoza, though volunteering is an exciting job, it needs hard work, dedication and commitment.

"Tough yet fulfilling that is how I describe the work of a volunteer. And that is how I define mine. Engaging in social work and other volunteer projects not only educate our minds but also our hearts. Honestly, I didn't recognize myself before as a volunteer until I join the UNV."
