Spanish youth volunteers help poor communities become self-reliant (6 April 2009)
Three Spanish University Volunteers in Manila are learning that helping others is possible even at a young age. And as they work to help poor communities become self-reliant, their own lives are changed for the better.
“The experiences of these Spanish University Volunteers have reaffirmed that no one is too young or inexperienced to help other people,” says Renaud Meyer, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Director. The UNDP administers the UN Volunteers Programme. “They often think outside the box, and pioneer unique approaches to development challenges,” he added.

Filipino volunteer laid to rest (17 November 2009)
UNV volunteer Jossie G. Esto, who died during the attack on a UN guesthouse in Kabul on 28 October, has been laid to rest in her native Philippines.
The memorial service in New Washington, Aklan Province, on 11 November was attended by about 300 people. They included UNV Executive Coordinator Flavia Pansieri, who read a statement on behalf of UNV volunteers and staff about Ms. Esto’s life and work.

Information technology: A driver for peace in Mindanao (25 August 2009)
How do you prepare Filipino people for jobs in the global economy and reduce conflict in the Mindanao region? Our volunteer with Cisco Networking Academy, Roy Lopez Pamitalan, thinks he has one answer.
Since 2005, Pamitalan has worked as the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) IT Specialist in the Mindanao areas of the Philippines, with particular focus in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao and Conflict-Affected Areas of Mindanao. Through his work with the Cisco Networking Academy, his goal is to engage the academic community into a new working culture to bridge the digital divide. He believes the cycle of conflict in Mindanao can be interrupted if people have alternative futures through opportunities to engage in the global workforce.
